Balance

We are at our best when we find balance. Work and play. Contemplation and action. Confidence and humility. We strive to build a company where balance is recognized as essential to creating great products for our customers.

Diversity & Respect

We value authenticity and diversity of thoughts, ideas, and experiences. We are better as a community when we seek to understand others. We are all on a life-long quest to become our best through exploration, education, and respectful debate and dialog.

Our Commitment

BUILD RESPONSIBLY

We are building Kitworks for the long-term, and take our impact as a producer of products seriously. 98% of our fabrics are recycled from post-consumer materials. We dye fabrics only when necessary, and all products are free from PFAS and other harmful chemicals.

SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY

From day one, Kitworks is dedicated to funding the amazing organizations that serve our community. Every year, we pledge to give 1% of revenue to organizations aligned with our values in two essential categories:
Access and advocacy for the places and activities we love.
Mountain safety and education to keep us safe out there.

Our Story

Why I Started Kitworks

A note from our founder

The story of Kitworks began with a simple question that I'd been thinking about for years: what if the products we use for managing our gear could actually help us get outside more and have better adventures?

We're a creative group when it comes to figuring out how to store and transport our gear. Plastic bins and one-size-fits all bags have been the standard for ages. But they actually stand in the way of getting on the trail. Or fully enjoying the road trip. Or giving our kids their best possible first ski experience.

I'm a little obsessive about organization and gear. As an avid skier, climber, mountain biker, trail runner, and camper with an active family, I spend a lot of time outside and have built some pretty dialed systems for managing our gear. But I still struggled to deal with the inherent limitations of plastic bins, sport specific bags, or general purpose duffels and totes.

So, in 2022 we really started to explore what a better solution would look like. So we started considering a new approach to the gear box. First, it had to protect your gear but also be lightweight. Flexible organization was key - customizable dividers and organizers so it would work equally well for a camp kitchen or for fly fishing gear. It would need to be weather-resistant and tough enough to live in the back of a truck or on a rooftop rack. It had to be collapsible for that Fiat you rent when climbing in the Dolomites. And mountable as a cabinet in your truck or adventure van. And...you get the idea - flexible and no compromise.

So, with some sketches and an industrial sewing machine, we started making and testing prototypes and sharing them with other likeminded people. In that first year, I probably visited 30 gear garages and countless adventure vehicles. Talked to everyone from weekend warriors to those that essentially make getting outside their sole purpose in life. And everyone has similar problems when it comes to managing gear, and we were starting to get the feedback that we were onto something.

That's when the bigger picture started to form. I realized that the power in this solution had to come from being adaptable to everyone's gear management needs. A gear box isn't the right answer for every pursuit. Sometimes a tote format is more appropriate. Or a duffel when air travel is involved.

So, we started thinking about a system - similar in concept to the platforms+applications approach we see in the software world. Building on this concept, we set out to create a system of platforms (the Gear Box, Gear Totes, and Duffel would be the first), and a range of modular accessories. To provide the most freedom and flexibility, the attachment of accessories must use open, standard attachment methods like MOLLE/PALS and hook and loop. This would open up the ability for customers to integrate thousands of 3rd party accessories. All of which could be mixed-and-matched by each customer to make their gear management system what they uniquely need in order to manage their kit.

This approach has several benefits:

  1. Your gear is organized exactly the way you want. Everything has its place, and it's easier to get outside with the confidence that you're prepared to have your best day.
  2. The system can be reconfigured as your needs change - the same platforms can be used for MTB, ski, or camp gear if set up slightly differently. This means more utility, fewer sport-specific bags, and less waste.
  3. By using open standard attachment interfaces, we make it easy for our customers to extend the system with products from other brands and to "hack" the system to create their own solutions to share with the community.

Early customer feedback and input to the development process has been amazing. Our community is so generous in sharing feedback, connections, and encouragement. I feel so fortunate to be bringing something into the world that actually helps our community get outside more and pursue their passions. To make memories with the people they love in the places that fill their soul.

After all, that's what it's all about.
